See if you can pick this film out of a lineup: a highly stylized and violent horror film directed by Rob Zombie and starring his wife, Sheri Moon Zombie. Well, you can’t, because that literally covers all six of Zombie’s films, including the upcoming The Lords of Salem. This time, the Zombies are telling a tale about witches, which the trailers bends over backwards to tie into Rosemary’s Baby. Check it out.
In the trailer, which features the heavy Inception trailer bleats of horns that are now becoming standard advertising fare, shows Sheri Moon Zombie as a dreadlocked DJ who has visions of a coven of witches in her apartment, and they appear to have a grand design for her. Dig it:
While the trailer seems to be focused on the goings-on in the main character’s apartment, the official synopsis describes the film thusly:
From the singular mind of horror maestro Rob Zombie comes a chilling plunge into a nightmare world where evil runs in the blood. The Lords of Salem tells the tale of Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ living in Salem, Massachusetts, who receives a strange wooden box containing a record, a “gift from the Lords.” Heidi listens, and the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of the town’s violent past. Is Heidi going mad, or are the “Lords of Salem” returning for revenge on modern-day Salem?
The trailers seems to pitch this film somewhere between the over the top ridiculousness of Rob Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses and the much more interesting and dark ‘70s grindhouse stylings of The Devil’s Rejects. But only time will the tell—the film is set for an April 19th release date.
