Everything about the Iron Man 3 PR campaign thus far seems to indicate that the film will be far darker than the glib original film the cynical cash-in shoddiness of the second, with the trailers featuring what appears to be a shell-shocked post-Avengers Tony Stark going up against an actually decent villain for once (seriously—Jeff Bridges in a robo-suit and Mickey Rourke with electric whips don’t exactly make for genre-defining Big Bads) in the form of Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin.  So far, we’ve seen Tony’s house destroyed, his suits blown up, and Iron Man in general take a heavy beating in the trailers thus far.  Now, the most recent poster makes things explicit as possible: Tony Stark falling out of the sky with a burning Iron Man suit falling off.

Despite the fact that it kind of resembles an airbrushed 1980s soft rock album cover (flip the poster upside down and it looks like Stark is doing his best Steve Perry impression: “Oh, Pepper, our love/ Holds on, holds on”) it’s a dramatic image that seems to define the general theme of the Iron Man 3 advertising: this is Tony Stark’s fall, both literally and figuratively (though you know he’s going to win in the end, because there’s an Avengers 2 on the horizon).  Anyway, poster:

Iron Man 3 is set for a May 3 release.

What do you think of the poster?
