Star Trek Into Darkness is certainly one of the most anticipated films of 2013—not only because of the never ending “is the villain secretly Khan?” debate—but also because the IMAX 3D CGI extravaganza (and any other trends you can think of—Smell-o-Vision? Is it in Smell-o-Vision, too?) likely marks the final moment in the Star Trek franchise before director J.J. Abrams jumped ship onto the Star Wars bandwagon. As such, Paramount was kind enough to dole out a behind the scenes featurette to keep fans hungry.
Oh, and what a featurette it is, coming in at a whopping one minute and 23 seconds (with a major chunk of that time simply being Abrams rattling off the names of the entire cast of characters—but hey, it comes with new footage, too). Abrams does the basic sequel PR—this is a movie that “ups the ante” and is “light years beyond” the last film, etc. Further, the stars of the film come out to sing the praises of the action, “beauty” and IMAX 3D features, all while offering a few peeks at new footage.
Elsewhere, Abrams calls the film the most exciting and challenging thing he’s ever done, which, as /Film notes, means this was likely shot before Abrams was charged with the Herculean effort of making the first good Star Wars film in 30 years. Because that’s kind of a big deal.
Star Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17, 2013.
What do you think of the featurette?
