This past weekend many X-Men fans, including myself, squealed with delight when we saw that Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and Shawn Ashmore were going to reprise their roles in the highly anticipated sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now that most of the main cast is lined up, which includes the return of Kitty Pryde, we wonder how Bryan Singer and company will handle the whole time-travel aspect of the story. Singer has some words on how it’ll all work out, without giving away too much.
Now first thing’s first, we want to know whether or not Kitty Pryde is going to be a main character. If you’re familiar with the comics, she’s the person who travels back in time and takes over the body of her younger self in order to warn the X-Men about the future that will befall upon them if the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants assassinates Senator Robert Kelly. You also follow Kitty Pryde in the holocaust-like alternate future as the remaining mutant survivors get picked off one by one. So yeah, it’s a really big deal that Ellen Page is back for the sequel. Unfortunately Bryan Singer doesn’t give us a straight answer when it comes to this question.
“It has a lot of aspects of the comic. The actual comic of Days Of Future Past had a whole ton of stuff going on, so it’s like any of these things; you have to distill it. But I think the fans will be pleased that some of the most exciting parts of Days Of Future Past are going to be connected to this movie.”
Fans have been speculating as to how they’ll deal with the whole time-travel aspect now. As mentioned above, Kitty Pryde pretty much possesses the younger version of herself in order to communicate with the X-Men of the past. Due to the continuity of X-Men and X-Men: First Class, Kitty Pryde does not exist in the earlier time frame. There’s only one version of her and it’s in the original trilogy. We’re curious if that means, if they still use Kitty Pryde as a main character, she will physically show up on Xavier’s doorstep and warn them about what could happen. Again, Bryan Singer is a little vague on his answer but he’s really making us think about how possibly elaborate this will be.
“It’s epic. I don’t think people realize how big this movie’s going to be. We get to bring both casts together. We’ve cracked it in a way that it makes sense. I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick wtih them. That’s why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible.”
Also, who’s going to play Forge? He still has yet to be cast and he’s another big character that helps Kitty Pryde go back in time. We’re sure Bryan Singer knows what he’s doing and look forward to seeing how this all comes together in months to come. If you want to be up-to-date on everything having to do with X-Men: Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer will be giving updates on his Twitter account.
