You’ve got to hand it to Mark Webb and company: in their efforts to truly distance their rebooted Spider-Man franchise from the Sam Raimi films, they’ve thus far steadfastly refused to use any of the same villains as Raimi (translation: all the good ones).  Instead, the Lizard was the underwhelming Big Bad for The Amazing Spider-Man; and last year it was announced that Jamie Foxx would portray Electro would appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  And it now appears he’ll have company, as—get this—Paul Giamatti is currently in talks to star as Rhino.  Yes, the villain in the rhino suit.  That’s the one.

The Hollywood Reporter (via /Film) notes that Giamatti is now in talks for the role, and that Felicity Jones is also currently being cast in an unknown role.

As you may or may not recall, Rhino began his comic book villainhood in 1966 as a dim-witted Russian thug who wore a special rhino suit that granted him superhuman endurance, speed, strength, and the ability to charge at things really, really hard.

While it’s admirable that Webb is scouring some of the lesser-known villains rather than immediately repeating Doc Ock or the Green Goblin… Rhino?  Seriously?  In a movie that already features Electro?  Oh well.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for a May 2, 2014 release.
