One of the critical successes of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival has been Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight, the third film in what is now a trilogy following Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. And today the film just scored another jackpot—it’s been purchased by Sony Pictures Classics.
Earlier today, Sony Pictures Classics announced that they have purchased all of the North American and UK rights to the film, which stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and was co-written by the two actors with director Richard Linklater.
Sony Pictures Classics announced in a statement:
“In 1991 we were in Sundance with ‘Slacker’ and we witnessed the birth of a major American filmmaker. At Sundance 2013 with ‘Before Midnight’, we have further confirmation that Richard Linklater is a film master at the peak of his form. This one has it all as entertainment and as a work of cinematic art. It is a perfect movie made by not one but three auteurs, Rick, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy. This movie will be incredibly successful around the world. And the acquisition is all the sweeter for our being back with Rickand producers Martin Shafer, Liz Glotzer and John Sloss.”
In Before Sunrise, Hawke portrayed a young, Grunge-era twentysomething travelling through Europe. He spends one night with Delpy’s travelling Frenchwoman, and the two fall in love before he is forced to return to America the following morning. Nine years later, the two meet again in Before Sunset, and speak of their regret at not staying with one another.
Before Midnight finds the characters nine years later, living together with twin children, and spending a night in Greece.
