Seeing as it is directed by man known for his blackly comic and absurdist aesthetic (Harmony Korine), and it features James Franco as a corn-rowed drug and arms dealer who seduces a couple of Disney actresses into a life of crime during Spring Break, the trailer for Spring Breakers is pretty much what you’d expect: insanity. Trashy, absolute insanity. But does that make it good or bad? Dig the trailer after the jump.
In the film, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine star as a group of college roommates determined to escape their small-town life and live it up during Spring Break. Their solution? Rob a convenience store and use to the money to skip town to Florida, where they can celebrate Spring Break properly by going out of their minds on someone else’s dime. However, the girls eventually get caught and arrested, and find themselves being bailed out by Alien (James Franco), a, shall we say, colorful arms and drug dealer. Alien then recruits the girls into his crew, and said insanity begins to unfurl.
While the film looks to carry with it the giddy thrill of trash cinema (and being distributed by the classy Annapurna Pictures is a nice boost), it’s been receiving highly mixed reviews. But you can decide for yourself when the film gets a limited release on March 22.
