In 2012, Matthew McConaughey churned out the most consistent (and consistently entertaining) year of his career, with a hypnotizing and disturbing star turn in Killer Joe and excellent performances in both Magic Mike and Bernie. And if the trailer for Mud is any indication, McConaughey’s hot streak will likely stretch into 2013. Check out the trailer below.
Directed by Jeff Nichols (who helmed the arresting Take Shelter) and co-starring Tye Sheridan (a.k.a., one of the kids from The Tree of Life), Mud looks to be a slice of gothic Southern Americana/noir. The film has already toured on the 2012 festival circuit, earning high marks for McConaughey, Sheridan, and Nichols alike. Watch the trailer:
Mud finds two boys, Ellis and Neckbone, happening upon a man who calls himself Mud and who is hiding on an island couched in the Mississippi river. Mud charms them with stories of his wild past (which include tales about his girlfriend, Juniper, along with an army of bounty hunters tracking him down for a murder he committed), and talks them into helping him make an escape. It’s all well and good until the bounty hunters come to town on the hunt for Mud.
Mud is set for a January 19 premiere at Sundance, and an April 26th general release date.
