We’ve been hearing all sorts of rumors about the upcoming Godzilla film, but one thing is for certain: casting is happening right now because shooting is set to commence in March. Though we’ve heard about a number of performers being considered for the project, it looks like Warner Brothers has their eye on a new leading man: Aaron Johnson.
If you don’t know Johnson, it’s probably because he’s had a number of roles that haven’t taken him to the next level. 2012 could have been a breakout year for the actor, as he played leads in both Oliver Stone‘s Savages and Joe Wright‘s Anna Karenina, but neither took hold. Johnson is probably best known as the lead in Matthew Vaughn‘s Kick-Ass, and it’s a role he’ll be returning to with this summer’s Kick Ass 2: Balls to the Walls. This news comes from Deadline, and it’s worth noting that Johnson is now the fifth name mentioned as being in contention for the part, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Caleb Landry Jones, Scoot McNairy and Henry Cavill.
Going by the list of names that have emerged it’s nice to see they are going after real actors for the lead, which is a pleasant surprise as the genre has often treated its human characters as filler between monster attacks. Godzilla is scheduled to hit screens (and shores) May 16, 2014.
