Now that the Twilight film series is over, it’s time for another series of Young Adult novels to be adapted into a series of franchise films to keep tween audiences busy on Friday nights. Thus, The Hunger Games series. And today, we’ve got our first official look at the second film in the series, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive, which features both a posed cover as well as an actual still image from the film—both of which feature Jennifer Lawrence as series hero Katniss, and franchise newbie Sam Claflin, who will be portraying Finnick Odair.
In Catching Fire, all former tributes (surviving members of Battle Royale The Hunger Games) return to the arena for Quarter Quell (a.k.a., a quarter century celebration, as it’s the 75thannual Hunger Games). Both Katniss and Finnick are former tributes, who, as seen on the EW cover, appear ready for The Running Man Quarter Quell.
While there was a bit of musical chairs concerning who would direct the film in 2012, the studio settled on Francis Lawrence, who will helm both Catching Fire and its sequel, Mockingjay. Based on the novels by Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire will hit theaters on November 22, 2013, and Mockingjay (split into two parts) will be released on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015, respectively.
