There truly are only a handful of actors that can maintain their blockbuster and indie-darling credibility simultaneously, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the poster child as to how it all works. He’s taken his time working up all the film ladders and is a role model for actors and filmmakers everywhere, so it only makes sense that he should host the 2013 Sundance Film Festival feature film Awards Ceremony on January 26 in Park City and streaming live.
Hosting may be the only area of the festival Levitt has not been a part of yet. He’s appeared in seven different films over the years at Sundance, most recently in (500) Days of Summer and probably most notably in Brick. Back in 2009 he made his directing debut with his short film Sparks. Back in 2011 we interviewed him at his installation for hitRECord which was featured at the New Frontier with a live performance event at the 2012. This will be his first year attending the festival as a feature film writer, director in his film Don Jon’s Addiction, in which he also stars along with Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza. And I bet you he knows exactly where to get the best beer at 2am.
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s accomplished and original artistic perspectives have contributed greatly to Sundance Institute and the independent film community. As host, he is sure to add flair to our Awards Ceremony in similarly exciting ways, and we are thrilled that he will join us in recognizing outstanding achievements at this year’s Festival.”
Sundance has grown far beyond its Park City walls, and will be live streaming the event for all to see on their Sundance Website. And though Levitt’s name may bring esteem, Sundance is probably looking for some extra viewers and there’s no doubt that while some may be tuning to hear him talk, others may be tuning in to watch him speak. Either, or, it should be a fun time and a great way to highlight some of the festivals biggest successes!
I for one can’t wait to see his film. He’s an extremely talented filmmaker and we are all very excited to see what he can do with a feature film working it from all angles.
