We’ll say this for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone—as far as modern comedies go, it has a pretty auspicious cast: Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde, James Gandolfini, Alan Arkin, and Jay Mohr all come together to tell the story of two burnt out Las Vegas magicians going up against a Chris Angel (remember him?) type of illusionist. Check out the trailer below, which even manages to feature a moderately funny Jim Carrey (remember him, too?).
The film tells the story of Burt Wonderstone (Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Buscemi), who have lorded over the Las Vegas magic show scene like a fictional Siegfried and Roy for years. As the years have passed, Wonderstone and Marvelton’s childhood friendship has eroded into hatred, and their show has grown stale and begun to suffer. Enter Carrey’s Steve Gray, whose cult magic act begins to usurp the Wonderstone and Marvelton show, forcing Wonderstone to seek out his magician hero for counsel. Dig the trailer:
The trailer has at least a solid chuckle or two, and Carrey actually seems funny again, but a lot of the humor seems derived from pee and old people jokes, which is never the best sign. Oh well, time will tell—the film is set for a March 15, 2013 release.
