Kojak—originally a popular 1970s detective procedure starring Telly Savalas as the lollipop-loving NYPD detective Theo Kojak, is also one of the few popular American television programs of the 1970s that has yet to be cannibalized for its name. Until now, that is. Because he is bald, just like Telly Savalas, Vin Diesel will be starring in a new film based on the Kojak series (and by “based on,” we mean that it will have a generic action movie plot that could have been given 100 different titles, and Diesel will turn in his usual wooden performance but will cap it off by uttering Kojak’s catchphrase, “who loves ya, baby?” at some point).
Universal will be distributing the film, which will be penned by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who did give us the three Daniel Craig Bond films (along with Paul Haggis and John Logan, respectively), but they were also responsible for the last two Pierce Brosnan 007 clunkers, so this could go either way, really.
Coming Soon also notes that while Kojak has never hit the big screen, Ving Rhames did attempt a TV reboot in 2005 (‘cause he’s bald too, you guys!).
What do you think of a Kojak film?
