If there’s one thing to be gleaned from the new The Lone Ranger trailer—aside from some awkward racial stereotyping—it’s that if you’ve enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, you’re going to love The Lone Ranger. Made by the team behind the first three Pirates films (director Gore Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer), The Lone Ranger trailer plays like a Pirates clip but with horses: it’s interminably loud, with a series of explosions, heavy CGI shots, “comical” portrayals of antiquity, and a typically oddball Johnny Depp teaming up with a bland white guy to fight bad guys—just like Pirates. But hey, it has horses and there’s a bird that sits on Depp’s head the whole time, so that’s different.
Depp plays Tonto to Armie Hammer’s John Reid, and reportedly the film takes the Big Trouble in Little China approach, in which the sidekick (Depp) is the real hero who keeps bailing out the ostensible leading man. Oh, but did we mention things go boom-boom a lot, and the thing with the bird plus all the horses? Oh, we did that? Then just watch the trailer and get it over with.
The Lone Ranger is set for a July 3, 2013 release.
