We got a poster for Oblivion recently, so it’s no surprise we’re now getting a trailer. Universal is likely hoping to put this in front of The Hobbit, where it will join a number of 2013 films that are hoping to be the next big thing. But Oblivion is weird. it comes from Joseph Kosinski, who directed Tron: Legacy, and stars Tom Cruise. And yet it’s coming out in April.

April used to be the dumping grounds for studio dogs, but the world has changed, and nothing changed it more than Fast Five, which stole some of Thor‘s thunder two years back. With March becoming one of the biggest months of the year, perhaps the whole calendar is due for a rethink as we’ve seen hit films come out at every point in the year, though February, March, May, June, July, November and December are the only months (so far) to launch a $300 Million plus hit. Here’s that trailer:

The trailer looks okay. Not great. We have high hopes because we wish Kosinski wasn’t the biggest problem with Tron: Legacy, but it looks similar to a number of post-apocalyptic science fiction thrillers that deal with people who may or may not have lost their identity. There’s a little Twelve Monkeys mixed with I Am Legend in this one and maybe a little Book of Eli. Here’s hoping it’s good. Oblivion opens April 12, 2013.
