Is it post apocalypse day? We’ve just had the trailer for the Tom Cruise movie Oblivion release its first trailer, and now we get After Earth, which stars Will Smith and son Jaden Smith in the science fiction film directed by M. Night Shyamalan. This one doesn’t seem as future-tech driven, but definitely looks familiar.
The trailer is built around a speech (maybe in the movie, maybe the teaser just features the more dramatically read version) where Smith’s character – who is, no crap, named Cypher Raige – tells his son about the difference between recognizing danger and fear. It’s a good speech, but it shows that young Smith must navigate a post-apocalyptic world on his own as it looks like his father broke his leg. Then the trailer reveals that they’ve crash-landed… on Earth! ZOMG. M. Night did it again, but here in a trailer. Watch:
The IMDb suggests there are other cast members, but this trailer suggests they’ll not be in much of the movie. Tonally, the trailer is weird because it sells adventure, but also a lot of running from wild animals generated in computers. That’s one of the most awkward things about the movie – if it is science fiction, why not have Jaden interacting with interesting looking foreign creatures? It’s all going to be CGI anyway. As a trailer, it does set up the premise of the film, and it’s interesting to see how much the younger Smith has grown since The Karate Kid, but is it just us or is this kind of boring? After Earth comes out June 7, 2013, and it’s going to be interesting to see how it fares, as Will Smith isn’t the movie star he used to be, and M. Night Shyamalan desperately needs a hit.
