Kevin Smith has been talking up Hit Somebody for years, and said it would be his swan song of a feature. Then this week a lot changed. It went from two films to one film to a miniseries. Now that he’s planning on taking Hit Somebody to television, he’s saying that he’s got a new last film: Clerks III.

That’s what Smith said on twitter today:

So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III. #TaDa

Now, considering that he’s already changed his original plans, it’s hard to know if this is a go, but it sounds like he’s probably already got a story lined up, and this makes the most sense for closure. Smith obviously respects trilogies, and if he’s going to go out on a movie, why not stop with the film franchise that started his career?

What Smith has to say about working a menial job is likely nil, but these characters are what made him, and are obviously very close to his heart. And though the second film has its issues and strange elements, it’s unquestionably his. All things considered, if this holds true, it’s the best possible end. Not that Kevin Smith is going anywhere.

Are you happy Smith is closing out on Clerks III?
