Alfred Hitchcock has proven to be fertile ground of late. It’s hard to think of many other fifty year old movies that could spawn a prequel television show (then again, The Wizard of Oz seems to have inspired Oz: The Great and Powerful), but that’s exactly what Psycho has done, and A&E – which will premiere the show in 2013 – has just released two teasers for its Psycho spin-off Bates Motel.
This is a modern prequel, which means it isn’t meant to line up with the original film exactly even though it’s the same character, with Freddie Highmore in for Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, and Vera Farmiga in for Anthony Perkins as Norman’s mother. Perhaps a period setting proved too expensive for the show, but more than that, we’ve seen pictures of Norman listening to an iPod. Perhaps he will text someone after the first murder (we can hope). Here are those teasers:
We’re curious if the show will in any way make mention or use the world of Ed Gein, who was the very fictionalized basis for Norman. Gein didn’t keep his mother around after she died, but was a grave robber and murdered two women. That’s not all that impressive in the serial killer universe, but because he collected “trophies” of his kills he served as the basis for Norman Bates, for Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and for Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. We’ll know for sure when the show premieres next year.
Are you up to watch some Bates Motel?
