When you transform a 6’5″ 250 lbs. ex-military police officer fictional character into Tom Cruise, there’s going to some grumblings from the book’s fanbase, so it makes sense for Paramount to release a featurette about Jack Reacher that shows author Lee Child (real name: Jim Grant) praising your star. Sure, they paid Child a lot of money for the adaptation, but he really means it… surely.
And what this latest featurette does is suggest that the books are a phenomenon along the same lines as James Bond or the Bourne books. And why not name check two exceptionally popular film franchises while talking about a book series that most film-going audiences haven’t read, because, you know, it’s not on purpose, it’s just the most handy comparison. Though this featurette offers a little bit of new material, it does suggest one thing: Paramount wants to turn this into a franchise as there’s sixteen other books they can draw from.
We’re hoping Jack Reacher is great, and we love Christopher McQuarrie, the writer/director of this film, for his previous films The Usual Suspects and The Way of the Gun. We’re starting to see TV spots and the like, but it feels like they need to start pushing this film harder. Hopefully the audience is there when Reacher hits theaters December 21.
