Earlier this month, we reported to you that a mysterious tweet from Jamie Foxx appeared to indicate that the actor—soon to be seen in Django Unchained—was up for the role of The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s big bad.  The villain?  Try not to giggle, but it’s the lower echelon Spidey baddie Electro (hey, give ‘em a break—after the Raimi films and The Amazing Spider-Man, they’re running out of top-tier villains).  And now the film’s director, Mark Webb, has spoken out on the subject.

Webb, when asked about Foxx’s possible involvement in the film, had this to say:

“I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying!  I think Jamie Foxx is one of the best actors around today. He’s such a great character actor and he’s a really brilliant guy. I would love to work with him and you’ll be hearing more on that shortly, I’m sure.”

Dumb pun aside, it sounds like Webb is sold on hiring Foxx as the “electrifying” villain.

In case you hadn’t heard, Electro is the official name of villain Max Dillon, who has the ability to conduct and control electricity via his body (sure, he’s no Doc Ock, but at least he isn’t a poorly-rendered CGI lizard stomping around with a British accent).

Foxx has also spoken out about the possible casting news:

“Fingers crossed it all works out…I have a little daughter, four years old, and what’s crazy is like, this past year she had a birthday where Spider-Man was the theme… I haven’t sprung it on her yet, but she will go crazy!”

While Webb seems hesitant to deliver an official confirmation, Foxx’s statement sounds totally confident that the deal is going down.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for a May 2, 2014 release.

What do you think—could Foxx work as Electro?
