Taking a cue from The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, the unfortunately titled Star Trek Into Darkness will be getting an IMAX preview of its first nine minutes six months before its official premiere on May 17, 2013.  That’s right—one of the most secretive and mysterious films of 2013 will be getting a nearly 10-minute IMAX preview, in just one month from now.

That’s a giant preview, especially considering that, thus far, we’ve got no plot, no villain, no poster, and no trailer.  All we’ve seen of the film is a joke-y three frame clip of Spock in a volcano and a picture of Spock fighting someone who may or may not be Khan.

All that ambiguity will change on December 14th, though, as J.J. Abrams and Paramount will have the first nine minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness playing in 3D on 500 IMAX across the country.  Many—including Cinema Blend—are speculating that the previews will play before The Hobbit, which opens on December 14th, and will also be in IMAX 3D.

Given that so little is known about Star Trek Into Darkness—seriously, not even a teaser trailer at this point—it’s almost a sure bet that the preview will be a winner, as fans are desperate for some form of footage from the upcoming film.  And, hey, is possible we could finally get a confirmation on the Khan thing?
