As part of Marvel’s takeover of everything ever, ABC is producing Joss Whedon‘s S.H.I.E.L.D. show as a spin off to all things Marvel, and they’re gearing up production for a possible January start of shooting, with a premiere sometime in the fall of 2013. Today two new additional cast members have been added to the show. What do those castings tell us?
Though we’ve known for a while Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson would be in the mix, and that Ming Na would be one of the stars, it appears that Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker have joined the project as Agents Gemma Simmons and Leo Fitz, with the latter a technology guru. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo constantly work together and are often bickering, but are both geniuses. One would think that they’re then in a relationship, but it’s hard to say.
Going by what we know now, it’s possible they could shoot a cameo with one or more of the stars of The Avengers, but it looks like they’re not going for any sort of star power with this project, and it seems likely that it will stay that way. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if we only get a brief glimpse of anything familiar from the movies in the pilot, and then it’s on to other business. In this case, more than anyone else, the franchise is the star, and if that doesn’t get people in nothing will. Expect S.H.I.E.L.D. sometime later next year.
