First, there was the internet rumor that Mark Wahlberg, fresh off of Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain, would also star in Bay’s upcoming Transformers 4.  Then Bay came forward to deny the rumors, and stated that he and Wahlberg were in talks about another project.  Then Bay came out again and stated that, hey, maybe the internet was on to something with that whole ‘Mark Wahlberg in the Transformers’ thing.  And now it is official: Wahlberg will star in Transformers 4, the most unnecessary sequel in human history.

Hey, it’s better than Shia LaBeouf, right?

Apparently, Bay had such an easygoing bromance and “exceptionally successful collaboration” with Whalberg on the set of Pain and Gain that he is chomping at the bit to work with the actor again, as the director notes on his website:

“Mark is awesome. We had a blast working on Pain and Gain and I’m so fired up to be back working with him. An actor of his caliber is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers’ legacy.”

Well, it can’t be any worse than Wahlberg starring in The Happening, so that’s something.

Transformers 4 was written by Ehren Kruger, and is set to start filming in the Spring of 2014, and is aiming for a June 27, 2014 release date; you can check out its new logo above.  Pain and Gain will hit theaters on April 26, 2013.
