So Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand, Tower Heist) directing a Hercules film based not upon Grecian myth but instead the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars sounds like just about the worst thing ever (well, not really, but the name Ratner should bring shudders of revulsion to any film fan); so brace yourselves for more: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been cast as Hercules in the film.

According to Cinema Blend, rumors concerning Johnson’s involvement began last February, when he was reportedly in talks to star as the titular character.  Ratner has been attached to the project since that time as well.

Production on the Hercules film is set to begin in early 2013.  The film is based upon Hercules: The Thracian Wars, a graphic novel written by Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya.  The film’s adapted screenplay was penned by Ryan Condal.

While it’s quite possible the film won’t be terrible, the fact that it sounds as if it’s going to be a 300-type production starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and directed by the guy who ruined the X-Men franchise (up to that point), well, let’s just say that we probably won’t be waiting in line for this sucker to drop into theaters with an inevitable 3D release.

What do you think of the Hercules news?
