Though it’s not due out until July 2013, Despicable Me 2 has just released its second trailer, which focuses on The Minion characters who will also be getting a spin off movie of their own. We don’t hear the voices of stars Steve Carell, Al Pacino and Kristen Wiig – it’s really a teaser, and we wouldn’t be surprised if 90% of the footage was made specifically for this trailer.

The teaser is clever and likeable because there’s actually no intelligible dialogue – The Minions speak gibberish, so it plays like a silent short. And – because it seems made specifically for today – they include music from John Carpenter’s Halloween, though the scares are minimal, and the music cue is a reference that will likely go over the heads of intended audience. Or will it? Watch the trailer:

These days it seems (at least by looking at the internet) that animated films are sold just as much to children as they are to adults. Between Pixar and their magic touch, and the fact that the biggest blockbusters are all based on comic books, mainstream cinema is now dominated by films that were once intended for young children, only to be consumed by everyone. Despicable Me 2 is scheduled to open July 3, 2013, and surely its audience will be both children and adults alike.
