Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is due out January 25, and it will begin Paramount’s festival of films from 2012 that got bumped/dumped into the next year, along with March 29′s G.I. Joe Retaliation and June 21′s World War Z. Now there’s a splattery trailer selling the film as a bit more like Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness than the first trailer.

The film stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Famke Janssen. The film was supposedly delayed because they were hoping Jeremy Renner would be more recognizable after this summer, in which he starred in both The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy. But after those films it’s hard to say that people like Renner more or less than they did before. They may know his name and face better, but it’s hard to say he’s a movie star, other than in the most literal sense. And then there’s Gamma Arterton, who was supposed to be the next big thing after playing a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace. In 2010 she had lead roles in both Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It was a double whammy of failure, and her career hasn’t recovered (and this probably won’t help). Here’s that trailer:

This looks a little better than the first trailer, if only because exploding witches do add something to the mix. But the fact that they went with an R rating also means that Paramount’s already written off a chunk of the audience (and probably the movie).

Does this trailer sell you more on the film?
