WARNING: This is definitely, definitely not safe for work.

Well, this certainly is… arresting.  The Evil Dead remake has elicited some internet groaning from fans—the original is perfect, so why remake it?—but after getting the thumbs up from original star Bruce Campbell, and from the looks of this brutal bloodbath of a red-band trailer, this remake might actually be an unflinching attempt to live up to the original, rather than just capitalize on the franchise’s name.

Director Fede Alvarez has included several nods to the original—yes, the wild camerawork is back, as is the Necronomicon, the queasy and uncomfortable “tree rape” scene, the old care, the tongue cutting, the scary gal in the floor, etc.  And then Alvarez takes all of those elements from the original and soaks them in about 100 gallons of blood.

Now, that doesn’t exactly make for a great film, but as far as trailers go, it certainly gets your attention.  Check it out:

The Evil Dead is set to be released in theaters on April 12, 2013.  The plot, like Sam Raimi’s 1981 original, centers on a group of young friends who discover the Necronomican (Book of the Dead) in an isolated cabin, which wakes up some fairly pissy demons who begin possessing the friends, one by one.

What do you think of the trailer?
