First off, it’s about time that Sony cast somebody as Mary Jane Watson. She’s easily one of the most important female characters in the Spider-Man universe. Now that director Marc Webb and company are moving forward with the The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, they’ve found their own version of the fiery red-headed love interest in Shailene Woodley. But how much screen time will she really get?

One of the biggest points about this casting news is that Shailene Woodley is confirmed for the role in the next two Spider-Man sequels. It’s been speculated for the past week that The Descendants actress would take on the pivotal role, so we’re glad to see that it’s set in stone. Since we have our Mary Jane Watson, what is to be of Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone)?

If you’re well-aware of the Spider-Man comic universe then you know what we’re referring to. If you’re willing to be spoiled right now over the character of Gwen Stacy then continue reading on. Gwen Stacy is best known not only as Peter Parker’s first love but the one who eventually gets killed by the hands of the Green Goblin. If you’ve seen the first Spider-Man movie then you basically know how the story plays out through the film’s final act. Instead of Mary Jane it’s Gwen Stacy as the victim, except in her case she doesn’t make it to the end. It’s a very sad story but it’s one of the most important aspects of Spider-Man’s early history that turns him into the powerful crime fighter he is in comics today. So since this has to happen we’ll be seeing the death of Gwen Stacy be carried out in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Does that mean Shailene Woodley will be appearing throughout all of The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Nope, not entirely, due to Gwen Stacy’s huge story. Miss Woodley will pretty much have a bit part, essentially setting up Mary Jane’s character in Peter Parker’s world. She’ll have her time to shine in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Either way it’s about time they bring back in Mary Jane Watson.
