We tend to hate on Hollywood studios because of the movie projects they choose to fund (Transformers 4, anyone?). So much of typical Hollywood product tends to be huge, expensive spectacles with little-to-no story, heavy special effects and poor acting. So, we at ScreenCrave have decided to help jump behind the indie film. Every week we’ll be bring you the Indie Fundraiser Roundup in which we feature projects seen on sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that need our help. Check out this week’s picks below.

  • Fishbowl: Fishbowl is a character-driven comedy about how tragic real life can be. It follows two people dealing with difficult situations, and trying to cope with the evolution of their friendship. The film seems to have the elements of a quirky indie movie, but the filmmakers need help finishing their project. Check out the Fishbowl Kickstarter campaign for more information.
  • Neighbors: Academy Award winning sound engineer Ron Judkins is directing his second feature titled Neighbors. He’s describing it as American Splendor meets American Beauty and has lined up an impressive cast. Oscar nominee Michael O’Keefe (Michael Clayton, The Great Santini) is the leading man, and he’s joined by Mary Dent (21 Grams), Blake Bashoff (Lost), Julie Mond (Priest) and Sean Patrick Thomas (Save the Last Dance). Neighbors follows a has-been graphic novelist going through a mid-life crisis. It’s a project that’s being pulled together by Judkins’ whole neighborhood in Los Angeles. They’re using Kickstarter to help finish the film and get it out to festivals. There’s some footage of the film available on their campaign page so check it out.
  • She’s A Beast: Marissa Macy is making a short film about an ex-girlfriend that turns into a beast. It’s a unique idea that also deals with an ordinary problem – exes. Macy put together a neat video with some of her friends, and with her wits convinced us to spread the word about her little project. Check out her campaign at Kickstarter.

Pick of the Week:

  • Bolero For Surfing In MoraviaEven when asking for help on sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, it’s important to grab the attention of those visiting your campaign page, either with a fun video or cool photos. The video that the filmmakers behind Bolero For Surfing In Moravia put together is so unique and fresh that we couldn’t turn our backs on it. The film tells the story of a Venezuelan immigrant in the Czech Republic who goes on a long journey to serenade someone. The film’s trailer has a fantastic soundtrack by Agustin Lara, Natalia Lafourcade and Devendra Banhart. Bolero is a project that deserves to be checked out, so go visit their campaign page at Indiegogo

Those are the projects we have for you this week. Be sure to check back every week for our Indie Fundraiser Roundup–helping you help indie cinema.
