While the latest in Avengers 2 news typically keeps fans frothing at the notion of what Joss Whedon will attempt to pull off next, it’s easy to forget that not only did The Amazing Spider-Man do solid business this summer, it has a sequel planned for 2014, as well. And two significant news bits leaked about the film today—one concerning the character of Mary Jane Watson, and the other dealing with a potential villain.
First up, the villain news—apparently, Electro is currently rumored to be one of the villains being considered for the second film in the rebooted franchise. For those not in the know, Electro can generate and conduct up to one million volts of electricity with his body, which, while cool for a comic book, is not the type of power that may make the easiest transition to live action film without looking, you know, kind of dumb. But hey, the first film made a giant man-lizard serviceable, so who knows.
Now, the Mary Jane Watson news. Those who saw the first film know that Emma Stone starred as Peter Parker’s (Andrew Garfield) love interest, Gwen Stacy. However, in the comics, Gwen meets a rather tragic end, and Parker eventually hits the jackpot with Mary Jane. And it now appears that The Descendents costar Shailene Woodley is now in talks to play M.J.
The Amazing Spider-Man is set for a May 2, 2014 release, so that gives us all plenty of time to obsess and argue about whether or not any of this comic book movie news will ever actually happen.
