It’s been a tough year for Community fans—after the wickedly brilliant (and depressingly under-watched) NBC comedy wrapped up its third stellar season in May, series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon was promptly given the boot by the NBC.  This, of course, led many fans to become horrified at the thought of a rudderless season four of Community without Harmon’s darkly funny touch.  Then came the news that NBC was moving the show from Thursday to Friday, which is essentially the sitcom graveyard.  Then came the news that NBC was only ordering 13 episodes of the show, rather than the standard 22.  And finally, this week, NBC all but confirmed that they essentially hate us all by pulling Community from the schedule altogether.

You see, Community was set to debut its fourth season on October 19th (along with the second season premiere of the horribly, horribly unfunny sitcom Whitney starring Whitney Cummings).  But yesterday it was announced that NBC was pulling both comedies off the schedule completely, with basically just a shrug and the intimation that they’ll put Community back on TV whenever they get around to it.

NBC then released an insulting full statement, in which the network stated it would rather focus on the comedies that air during the first half of the week for now, and that Community will stay “in our back pocket” in case they need it.  Really.

“Given the success we’ve had for the past four weeks – including winning the first week of the season in A18-49 – we’ve decided to continue to concentrate our promotional strength on our new NBC shows that are scheduled Monday through Wednesday and have therefore decided to hold COMMUNITY and WHITNEY from their previously announced premieres of October 19th. “

There’s the windup, and wait for it, wait for it, here comes the pitch…

“Without having to launch these comedies on Friday at this time, we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week — plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights.  When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks,  we will announce new season premieres of WHITNEY and COMMUNITY.”

Boom.  So there you have it, Community fans.  One more nail in the coffin.

What do you think of the Community news?
