As her long, slow slide into the depressing caricature of fallen Hollywood starlet continues to become all too real, Lindsay Lohan took time out from her busy schedule of Lifetime movies to co-star in a quick and bare-bones production of The Canyons, a script by American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis.  Directing the film is Paul Schrader (writer of Taxi Driver, Rolling Thunder, and The Last Temptation of Christ, among many others), with a co-starring role by porn star James Deen.  So there’s an awfully interesting pedigree of talent at play here, and the result is… basically a knock-off of the exploitation trailer knock offs that Quentin Tarantino and co. produced five years ago for Grindhouse.  Still, it’s a rather accurate knock-off.

The basic plot concerns “the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition” and is set in Los Angeles, in which “a group of young people in their 20s” find out how “once chance meeting to the past unravels all of their lives.”

It’s hard to say from the trailer whether or not any of that will amount to anything good, as the hyper-stylized clip features no real plot, and Lindsay Lohan and James Deen have no discernible acting talents.  In fact, most of the talent seems to be behind the camera on this one—Schrader is still capable of turning out a solid film when he chooses to do so, and Ellis (when not bending over backwards on Twitter to show off how inflammatory and ‘iconoclastic’ he is) can actually tell a good story.

It remains to be seen whether the dark combination of writer and director will be able to guide a story anchored to Lindsay Lohan and a porn star, but hey, at the very least, it will likely be very (unintentionally) funny.

What do you think of the trailer?
