Between an awkward but bonding road trip, a strip club and an all you can eat contest, it feels like The Guilt Trip - which stars Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand -is looking to combine a bunch of ideas from the big comedies of the 1980′s. Already there’s a little Planes, Trains and Automobiles in the premise, but now it looks like there’s the steak eating contest from The Great Outdoors (as for strip clubs, they’re in virtually every comedy from the 1980′s for no reason). Check out the poster and the trailer.

The plot is high concept: Rogen’s got a job opportunity, Streisand is lonely, together they go on a road trip that allows them to fight, but also allows them to grow closer. The steak eating contest looks like a fun scene, which might cap with a reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Lots of movies references in this one, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Here’s the trailer.

What’s interesting about this film is its stars. On paper this looks like a home run, but Seth Rogen hasn’t exactly been hitting it out of the park lately, though it feels like he took a little time off after The Green Hornet. Streisand hasn’t done much acting over the last few years other than the Focker movies, and it’s hard to know if her fan base will come out for a film that looks a little raunchy. The Guilt Trip comes out Christmas Day, so we’ll know more then.

Do you buy Seth Rogen as Barbra Steisand’s kid?
