When we heard that Wes Anderson was teaming up with Tim Burton favorite, Johnny Depp, for his forthcoming movie The Grand Budapest Hotel, we were excited to see what the fruit of that collaboration would be. But we got our hopes up for nothing, because Depp is not in The Grand Budapest Hotel. He didn’t drop out, he was just never actually cast in the movie, despite the reports from Deadline.
Over the weekend, The Huffington Post got the chance to talk to Anderson, and asked him if Depp was the star of The Grand Budapest Hotel. He replied:
“It’s not Johnny Depp. You know, the Internet has a way of announcing things on its own. You will find that even though I’m very aware of the cast that has been announced on its own devices, you’ll never find me saying who’s in the movie. Or, as far a I know, anybody else. I really don’t know where it all comes from. In fact, Johnny is somebody who I would love to work with at some point, but he’s not going to be in this movie. But I actually have not put the cast out — I have not announced the cast. We have quite a great cast.”
Now that’s unfortunate news, but it couldn’t have been said any clearer.
It had also been recently announced that Bill Murray and Angela Lansbury would be starring in the film. Anderson didn’t confirm Lansbury’s casting, but when asked about Murray taking a roll, the director said:
“That’s true. That’s true. Bill is in it. Bill is in it.”
Now it seems like we have less information than what we started with. Anderson has been very coy about the details of his next movie. All we know is that it’ll be set in Europe and won’t be family friendly, like his two previous films.
It’ll be nice to eventually see Depp star in a Wes Anderson movie. For now though, he’s only got Disney’s The Lone Ranger and Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in his future… which is basically more of the same.
Are you disappointed Depp won’t be the star of The Grand Budapest Hotel?
