Despite the fact that The Expendables 2 did middling business compared to its surprise success of the 2010 original, producer Adi Shankar is still moving forward with his “OK, we’re pretty much ripping off The Expendables, but with women!” film project, which will gather together a host of cinema’s most badass leading ladies for an action film project similar to Stallone’s Expendables franchise. And the film now has its first cast member—Haywire star and former MMA fighter Gina Carano.
If you’ll recall, Carano starred in Steven Soderbergh’s enjoyable but slight spy-betrayed-by-her-organization film, Haywire, in which Carano is a quick and brutal ass-kicking machine. Carano is already slated to appear in Fast and Furious 6, and Shankar recently stated that this female Expendables project, for lack of a better title, would be nothing without her:
I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of ‘The Expendables’ without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.
The film will be produced by Shankar’s production company, 1984 Private Defense Contractors (responsible for such dark and heavy fare as The Grey and Killing Them Softly). No other actresses have been cast in the film as of yet, but Shankar has previously suggested such names as Linda Hamilton, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, and more. While it’s unclear whether or not they will sign on; if so, Carano, being a younger star, will probably be part of the second-tier team, a la Liam Hemsworth in Expendables 2.
Who would you like to see cast in this project?
