Ang Lee‘s adaptation of Yann Martel’s Life of Pi comes across like an all or nothing gamble. With its lead an unknown and 3D for what seems like an art-house movie, it feels like this either becomes the Best Picture Oscar front-runner, or leaves theaters after two weeks. There are now two new international trailers, and they haven’t convinced us either way, but it does show the spectacle and scale.
The first thing we thought of when the trailer began was “Oh, this is We Moved a Zoo.” But the shots of the ocean and the tiger and the animal life does make it look interesting, even if neither trailer makes a compelling case that this is going to be a great film. The film has had some footage preview events, and audiences were wowed there, so hopefully the film comes together.
The bottom line is that Ang Lee is a really great director, and films like The Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil, Hulk (yes, Hulk) and Brokeback Mountain makes this a must see… even if we’ve heard mixed things about the source material. The film opens November 21 in America, and so perhaps it will become the must see movie of Thanksgiving weekend. Or perhaps it will be that weekend’s turkey.
Life of Pi trailers, Yay or Nay?
