In the months after The Avengers’ epic box office success (currently the third highest-earning film in history), one of the biggest questions surrounding the newest leg of Marvel Studios’ comic-to-film franchise was whether or not writer/director Joss Whedon would be returning to helm The Avengers 2.  Well, as we reported earlier this summer, a few dump trucks of money later, and Whedon was back onboard.  And in a recent interview, Whedon spoke out about why he agreed to come back and film the sequel.

Speaking in a recent interview, Whedon noted that it wasn’t just money that brought him back—in a sudden burst of creativity at a British bar, the cult figurehead filled an entire notebook with ideas for the second Avengers film:

There’s a business aspect to it and I would be disingenuous not to say that, but the question for me is, Do I have another story to tell about these people? So we worked on the business side of it and I didn’t think it was going to happen–I was like ‘I’m never going to do this again.’ But once they worked on the business aspect of it I thought that seems fair and cool, so, the question was, Do I have another thing to say? I was in London and I went to a pub and had some fish & chips & a pint and started writing in my notebook. I’m writing if I was going to do this what would I say & 40 minutes later I filled the notebook. So I text my agent & said to make the deal. I’m so in love with that universe & the characters & the way they were played & I have so much more I want to do with them. I know I can’t match the success of the first one but I can try to make a better film & that’s what I’m excited about, that’s the new room of fear I’m entering now.

Interesting news—while The Avengers was by no means a perfect film, there is something comforting about knowing that a genuine fan is at the helm of these films, rather than a hired gun with no knowledge or particular interest in the history of the characters and their books.

In other Marvel news, yesterday we reported that James Gunn had officially signed on to direct Guardians of the Galaxy, and /Film noted today that Jim Starlin, creator of the Marvel big bad known as Thanos (featured in The Avengers post-credits stinger), confirmed that Thanos would appear in both The Avengers 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy, helping to tie the two films together.
