Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph comes across like the perfect storm of nostalgia. Video games have been with us for over 40 years, which means any parent looking to take their kids to see the film will remember Donkey Kong, Mario in his many iterations, and a number of the other games referenced directly or indirectly in the film. On top of which the latest trailer makes the movie look good.
John C. Reilly voices the titular character, who’s grown tired of being the bad guy so many decades on. He ends up leaving his game to join a Halo/Call of Duty-esque game to prove that he’s not just the bad guy, but also gets sidelined in a kids racing game called Sugar Rush, where he meets Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), and we’re guessing – just guessing – that Wreck-It Ralph gets to prove that he’s a good guy at some point near the end.
The film hits theaters November 2, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the film is a massive hit. Director Rich Moore worked on The Simpsons and Futurama, so he’s got some solid credentials, and at this point most people love video games. Even girls. Yes, girls play video games too, but let’s not open that nerd Pandora’s box (and that’s not a reference to Avatar).
