Now that Ryan Gosling‘s The Place Beyond The Pines has been purchased by Focus Features, two brand new clips have hit the web. This is the first video footage of Derek Cianfrance‘s follow-up to Blue Valentine, which reunites him with his long-lost lookalike brother, Mr. Gosling. The videos below will give you a hint of the tone and scope of the film, which had been kept under wraps until now.
In Pines, Gosling plays Luke, a professional motorcycle rider turned bank robber. Bradley Cooper also stars as a rookie police officer who goes after Luke. The two engage in a long lasting feud that spans over generations. Here’s the official synopsis:
Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son. But when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper), their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud. The Place Beyond the Pines is a rich dramatic thriller, tracing the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains.
Pines premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last Friday and has garnered a lot of praise. Indiewire‘s Kevin Jagernauth commended Cianfrance’s direction and compared to great, contemporary American filmmakers like James Gray, Paul Thomas Anderson and the Coen Brothers.
Vulture got the chance to interview the director and discovered that a real bank robber was consulted to get an honest idea of what it’s like to pull that type of heist:
And all of a sudden the police showed up at our office with a guy and they’re like this is so-and-so, he just got out of jail, he robbed twenty banks in Schenectady. He was like, “What’s going on guys, I was just working at the tree nursery and these cops came and picked me up. What do you want?” He said the thing that movies always get wrong about robbing a bank is that they’re perfect in movies, but in real life robbing a bank is really messy. And he told us every detail. So we tried to make it true to that. When we robbed the banks, we cast bank tellers who’d been robbed before.
Both of the clips below feature never-before-seen footage. The first is a red carpet TIFF interview with the director and co-star Eva Mendes, who plays Gosling’s girlfriend in the movie. The interview is intercut with footage featuring Gosling easting some fruit and scoping out a bank.
The second clip shows Cooper’s character in a hospital bed. He’s being rudely interrogated by one of his superiors. You can check that one out at HitFix.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to Pines?
