For several months now, we’ve been referring to the untitled Star Trek reboot sequel as Star Trek 2, as not official title for the film has existed.  That changed, though, with the 46th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise this weekend, in which the new official title was announced.  And guess what?  It’s horrible.

Get this: J.J. Abrams’ 2013 sequel to his Star Trek sequel will be titled Star Trek Into Darkness.  Get it?  It’s going to be a trek through space in which the characters go into darkness.  Get it?  Get it?  If it seems a little too literal and on the nose, well, that’s because it is.  Next up, we’ll be finding out The Avengers 2 will be called The Avengers Assemble Together, In Order To Avenge Wrongs, Because That’s What Avengers Do, Get It?.  Or maybe we’ll get a Transformers Into Cars and Trucks next.

While Paramount has not officially confirmed this, Trek Movie notes that Paramount has purchased both and domain names, which means that title is pretty much a lock for the anticipated new sequel.

No word yet on why the name does not include a colon (Star Trek: Into Darkness), and why they opted for a goofy play on words instead.

What do you think of the new Star Trek film title?
