It seems Ethan Hawke is an awesome liar – who knew? Just last week reports were in that work had begun on filming Before Midnight, a sequel to Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, and from the impression Hawke gave, the shooting was very much in the preliminary stages. Now word is out that the film wrapped last night.

Hawke’s exact words had been: “If it works out, we’ll film it, and if it doesn’t, we won’t.” – Well, it seems like things “worked out” pretty well, considering the whole thing is now in the can! Nice work, Ethan. Well played.

Apparently Before Midnight will be doing the rounds to potential buyers at this week’s Toronto Film Festival. Meanwhile, Linklater, Hawke and co-star Julie Delpy have released a joint statement confirming what they’ve been up to:

“It’s great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight.”

The first film, Before Sunrise, followed strangers Celine and Jesse as they set about exploring Vienna together, while the follow-up, Before Sunset, saw them rekindle their feelings for each other during a stolen day in Paris. As for what could happen in Greece, no plot details have been released as yet, but guesses are in that romance could feature heavily in this one.

So, how did this sequel manage to completely fly under the radar? It seems we’re living in an age where hardly anything’s a secret these days, so Linklater’s also played this well. Collider also pointed out how, amazingly, director David Gordon Green also managed a similar stunt earlier this year when he wrapped a secret comedy remake of Either Way called Prince Avalance with Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch in Austin.

Presumably once the film has been sold it’ll come along with a 2013 release date, but we’ll keep you updated.

Are you excited about Before Midnight?
