The RoboCop reboot has been taking some lumps lately, with reports of a henpecked and filmmaking-by-committee production that’s out of the director’s control, and then the news that Hugh Laurie was backing out of negotiations to play the villain in an already pretty auspicious cast.  Well, the film finally hit another bit of good luck in the casting department—Michael Keaton will be your RoboCop villain, ladies and gentlemen.

Yes, that Michael Keaton: Beetlejuice, Batman, Mr. Mom.  Though he’s appeared only infrequently in films of late, and, aside from voicing a Toy Story 3 character, seems to shy away from high profile films, the mercurial actor has signed on to play the CEO of Omni Corp.  Omni Corp is the greedy and unscrupulous corporation that turns Detroit police office Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) into a cybernetic cop named RoboCop.

Keaton will be joining a cast that includes Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Earle Haley, Abbie Cornish, Michael K. Williams, and Jay Baruchel.

While expectations for this film are still dizzyingly low—a reboot of RoboCop in general is dubious, and one with a production that is spiraling out of control before it even officially begins (shooting starts this fall to meet the August 2013 release date) doesn’t exactly inspire hope–with this cast, the film will at least be, well, interesting.
