It all started a few weeks ago, when it was rumored and reported that Warner Bros. had approached Ben Affleck to direct its own take on the ‘sweet, sweet Jesus, The Avengers made a ton of bank, we better get on that’ phenomenon adaptation of DC Comics’ The Justice League, featuring Batman, Superman, The Flash, et al. Affleck wasn’t interested, and now the rumor-mill onus has fallen, interestingly, on the Wachowkis. Read on for more.
First, in response to the rumors, Affleck had this to say:
I’m not working on the Justice League. One of the problems with entertainment web sites is that they need to fill pages, and that’s how rumors get started… Justice League sounds really exciting, but it’s not something I’m working on.
All of which confirms what everyone suspected—after his foray into tights with Daredevil, and considering the kind of mature, adult filmmaking he’s embraced as a director, Affleck and The Justice League make zero sense.
A much better fit, however, may be with the creators of The Matrix, Andy and Lana Wachowski. Apparently, the directors of The Matrix, Speed Racer, and the upcoming Cloud Atlas are being considered by Warner Bros. to helm its newest tentpole project (despite the fact that they ran both The Matrix franchise and Speed Racer into the ground—but hey, Cloud Atlas looks and sounds amazing).
However, while the Wachowskis are masters of creating immersive worlds and would like do the Justice League, well, justice, /Film smartly notes that the project “would require a working relationship with DC,” something that the highly independent siblings would likely balk at (unless a dump truck full of money arrives in their respective front yards, courtesy of Warner Bros.).
More on this as it develops.
