It’s still a bit of a touchy subject for some, but do you remember how you felt about Star Wars: Episode One – The Phantom Menace? How about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? The Godfather Part III? Well, you may not be surprised to know these and many more have been ranked in the Top 50 most disappointing movies of all time, with the Harrison Ford film ranking no.1 on the list. Read on for more.

Total Film took the poll and assembled this jolly list (below) of the Top 50 films for which there was a certain or even considerable amount of expectation and which, frankly, turned out to be fairly terrible, according to DarkHorizons.

And it seems not one household name filmmaker has escaped the dreaded list; on there is Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, David Fincher, Oliver Stone, Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Mann, Steven Soderbergh, Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, the Wachowskis, M. Night Shyamalan, Ridley Scott, Cameron Crowe, Ang Lee, Zack Snyder, Roland Emmerich, Robert Rodriguez, Kevin Smith and many more.

Indy 4 and The Phantom Menace were both returning to popular franchises after breaks of some 20 years, so it’s no surprise that high expectations were built up – and swiftly crushed when both films landed with a heavy thud.

Almost all of the films on this list were released since the turn of the millennium, and only one entry from this year has so far made it – Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Whether or not that’s fair, you decide, but Scott did hype up the film by releasing an obscene amount of trailers, audio, teasers etc. until we got so excited about it we thought that by the time we got to the cinema we were probably going to wet ourselves – so maybe it’s not entirely out of the question that the film could have been a disappointment to some; especially if they were expecting something more like the previous Alien movies.

Some other placements seem a little high on the list, such as Sucker Punch, whereas movies such as Quantum of Solace or Alexander arguably deserve to be higher.
