José Padilha’s RoboCop remake isn’t exactly having its best month—coming on the heels the script leaking to an entertainment writer who publically bashed the apparently terrible reboot is the news that Hugh Laurie will not be playing the film’s Big Bad after all. Laurie had entered negotiations for the role back in June; however, it appears he will not be joining the already-impressive cast.
Laurie had been in negotiations to play the CEO of Omni Corp, the shady organization that transforms mortally wounded cop Alex Murphy (played this time around by Joel Kinnaman) into RoboCop, the cyborg police officer.
No word yet on why Laurie dropped out of negotiations (including if it had anything to do with the reputed fact that the script is an absolute dud), nor is there any indication on who will replace the actor best known to American audiences as Dr. Gregory House from House.
What is known is that the film already has a pretty solid stable of actors signed on: Kinnaman, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jackie Earle Haley, Abbie Cornish, Michael K. Williams, and Jay Baruchel have already joined the cast of this reboot.
RoboCop is set for an August 13, 2013 release date.
