John Travolta is no stranger to camp or schlock—having starred in everything from Hairspray to Staying Alive to The Punisher to the Look Who’s Talking films—but this seems a bit nutty, even for him: rumor has it that Travolta is attached to star in the remake of The Toxic Avenger.
That’s right—the 1984 cult comedy about a weakling janitor who, after being dropped into a bin of toxic waste, becomes a radioactive superhero named Toxie, is finally getting the remake treatment. The original film spawned three sequels—The Toxic Avenger Part II, The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV—and is now being remade by Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink.
Further, John Travolta is now attached to said remake. It is not known if he would be portraying Toxie, or, as First Showing surmises, “the villain of some corporation polluting the Earth and forcing Toxie to get back into action.”
At this point in his career, Travolta seems to be comfortable sliding out of leading roles and into villain or supporting bits. So perhaps it isn’t all that far-fetched to imagine Travolta dunking a nerdy janitor into a vat of toxic waste. I’d pay to see it.
