Bruce Campbell is known for being a bit of a “straight shooter,” and addressing his audience with a frankness that can be quite refreshing. So it was a good sign when we heard that he’s recently been raving about next year’s Evil Dead remake in an interview with Digital Spy.
Campbell served as a producer on the Fede Alvarez-directed redo alongside Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, so the property appears to be in safe (and familiar) hands.
Saying that, Campbell is well aware that fans are “pissed” about the fact that they’re doing an Evil Dead remake in the first place – don’t worry, he knows all about it. And here’s what he had to say after seeing a rough cut of the film:
“We’re really excited and really behind it, [but] it’s going to take a bit to get the Evil Dead fans behind it. We know we’ve pissed a lot of them off. We appreciate that and we appreciate their anger and their zeal, but the only thing we want to impress upon them is that we didn’t screw it up. This is going to be just as memorable as [the original] Evil Dead without being the same movie.”
He went on to describe the film as “fabulous” and “looks beautiful” before going on to talk about the effects:
“The effects are 10 times better than we ever had access to and the actors are all better than we were in 1979. Though granted Sam Raimi is a mad genius, so we got a crazy result like Evil Dead out of this amateur enthusiasm sort of thing.”
Campbell has already talked about his role as producer in this remake and hinted that he may make a very brief appearance in the film, himself, but will not be starring.
The film is scheduled for an April 12, 2013 release.
