If you’ve been living under a rock lately, or perhaps simply wandering amidst a post-apocalyptic wasteland made barren by the ravages of humankind’s greed while simply searching for a bit of gasoline and dog food, you may have missed out on the fact that director George Miller is expanding upon his original Mad Max trilogy by shooting a fourth film, Mad Max: Fury Road, with Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson. And you might just be curious as to what the film is about, and we have the details below.
The Latino Review posted a press release for the film today, noting that Mad Max: Fury Road finds our former law officer turned haunted post-apocalyptic drifter “caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa.” Ok, cool, so far so good—your basic Mad Max movie storyline, in which he falls in with people who need help against a mean ol’ Big Bad.
But wait, there’s more. “This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.” Huh… ok, then.
Mad Max: Fury Road is currently filming in Africa (it was originally set to be an Australia shoot, but heavy rains nixed that).
Elsewhere in Mad Max news, the original Max, Mel Gibson, took time out from his busy schedule of being recording screaming things at people to tell Coming Soon that he and George Miller had previously talked about an idea for a new Mad Max but that it would have been far too expensive to produce. He also took a moment to comment his replacement, Tom Hardy:
Oh yeah, I’ll have a look. It’ll be fun. I think he’s a good actor. He commits completely and he looks great. There’s this scary thing about him which is kind of right for that. Tom needed to sit down and talk more than I did. I’m really happy about that. But I hope they do a great job. I’m a big fan of George’s.
Mad Max: Fury Road is set for a 2013 release.
