The success of The Avengers is dwindling down, and Joss Whedon is so afraid of being forgotten that he’s asked us to please boycott Mike Birbiglia‘s upcoming indie comedy Sleepwalk With Me. Whedon has every right to be afraid because this little gem currently holds a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (The Avengers falls behind with a mere 92%), and fans have successfully (more than) doubled the amount of screens that will be showing the film.
When Whedon’s Avengers first hit theaters, it was showing in over 4,000 theaters, now it’s down to under 500 screens. The director doesn’t like that very much. Especially since, Sleepwalk With Me, which won the Best of NEXTAudience Award at this year’s Sundance, will be debuting on 80 screens (originally that number was 30). This all thanks to a Twitter campaign where fans are demanding the film to open in their city.
Here’s Whedon asking you to please boycott the movie:
It’s all good fun of course. We suspect the real Joss Whedon is actually a big fan.
Sleepwalk With Me stars Birdiglia, Lauren Ambrose, Carol Kane, Jame Rebhorn and Cristin Milioti. It opens in select theaters starting August 24th. You can visit the This American Life website to request a showing in your town. Check out the trailer below:
