Director David Ayer’s (Harsh Times, Street Kings) newest film, End of Watch, finds Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two Los Angeles police officers who make a discovery that puts them in the crosshairs of a drug cartel. The film was shot with handheld HD cameras, giving it a surreal, hyperkinetic look that meshes well with the wildly violent and disturbing trailer, which you can check out below (though you may wish to make sure your boss isn’t standing over your shoulder).
End of Watch is Ayer’s third film as a director and seventh as a writer (previous writing credits include U-571, Training Day, The Fast and the Furious, Dark Blue, and S.W.A.T., as well as Harsh Times and Street Kings), and it certainly appears to be the work of an assured director at home in his craft. It also makes me really, really dizzy. Check out the trailer:
So there you have it: Gyllenhaal and Pena get in deep with a cartel, there’s some shooting, some swearing, then some more shooting, somebody runs, the camera spins around and is then attached to a shotgun, I take some medication for vertigo, and then somebody gets shot again.
End of Watch is getting some good end-of-summer buzz—find out on September 21, with it hits theaters.
What do you think of the trailer?
